If you are an international student studying in Canada, it’s essential to ensure your study permit remains valid throughout your program. Many students take longer to complete their course or transfer to a new program, which often means applying for a study permit extension. Extending your permit on time helps you stay in Canada legally and continue your education without interruptions.
You must apply to extend your study permit if:
1. Your current license will expire before you finish your program
2. You have transferred to a longer program
3. You need additional time to complete your final semester
4. Your school changed your study schedule
5. You are switching to a higher level of study
If your study permit expires, you cannot continue studying or stay in Canada legally. That’s why planning is essential.
To continue studying in Canada, you must submit an extension application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) before your current permit expires.
a) Updated enrolment letter
b) Transcript or progress report
c) Proof of financial support
d) Passport (must remain valid throughout your extended stay)
IRCC requires most in-Canada applications to be submitted electronically, including:
a) Temporary resident status extensions
b) Study permit renewals
c) Work permit renewals
This step is essential. Submitting early ensures you remain in Canada legally and avoid losing your student status.
When you apply to extend your study permit before it expires, you automatically receive implied status, which means you can stay in Canada and continue studying under the same conditions until IRCC makes a decision. However, implied status only applies if your study conditions remain unchanged. If you want to change schools, switch programs, or adjust the conditions on your permit, you may need to apply for a new study permit, not just an extension.
If your study permit has already expired, you still have options.
You may apply to restore your status within 90 days of your permit expiring. You cannot study during this period until you regain your status. You must apply for restoration if you miss the renewal deadline, your permit expires unexpectedly, or you cannot submit your extension on time. Restoration does not guarantee approval, so it’s always safer to use it before your permit expires.
If you plan to transfer to another institution, change the type of program (e.g., diploma to degree) and modify any conditions listed on your study permit. You may need to apply for a new study permit, not just an extension. Changing schools within Canada often requires updating your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number in your IRCC account.
A study permit is not a visa. If you plan to travel outside Canada during your studies, you may also need to renew your Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Your visa must be valid for re-entry into Canada. Many students apply for a TRV after extending their study permit to avoid travel complications.
If you study in Quebec, you need both a valid Study Permit and a valid Certificate of Acceptation Québec (CAQ). If your CAQ is expiring, you must first apply for a new CAQ through the Quebec government. After receiving the new CAQ, you can submit your study permit extension to IRCC.
1. Apply at least 30–90 days before your study permit expires
2. Check your school’s enrolment requirements
3. Make sure your passport will not expire soon
4. Keep copies of all documents submitted
5. Maintain full-time student status unless officially permitted otherwise
