International students in Canada have the right to change their program or institution, provided their study permit is valid. This means you can change the DLI college you are studying at in Canada after obtaining a visa or study permit.
However, please note that you must comply with your study visa conditions and follow the required steps.
To take the first step towards changing your college or school, you must make sure that you meet all the criteria required by your study permit. This involves studying at a designated learning institution (DLI) and regularly participating in your studies in Canada. Note that your primary purpose and activity must be studying; therefore, your study program is required to be on a full-time basis.
You will also need to inform the CIC of the college change. This is done by reporting to the federal government through your online account that you have changed your post-secondary institution. After signing in to your online account, you will need to enter your new college’s DLI number, your student ID number, and the date you are going to start your new study program.
The process of changing colleges in Canada involves following specific steps through your online account in the portal:
You can update your information about your new college or program by entering the new DLI number, student identification number, and the date you will start your new program.
Click on the “Submit Transfer” button.
Before confirming, make sure all the information you entered has been reviewed one last time. If you see no errors, click on “Confirm Transfer”.
When you receive a notification telling you that your request is complete, it means that you have already successfully informed the federal government about your change in your study plans.
In Quebec, the process of changing schools or study programs is slightly different because the province operates its own immigration system. International students wishing to apply for study in Quebec must follow the province’s specific rules and procedures.
If you want to study in Quebec as an international student, you must have a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ).
Those already in Quebec as students must submit a new CAQ application to change their educational program, school, or institution. As long as you comply with all conditions of your current study permit and actively participate in your studies in Canada, you may modify your study program.
If you want to change your study program in Canada or want to know your options for becoming an international student, we are always here to help. Canada has helped hundreds of students obtain their study permits and successfully finalize their applications.
